Webelos II Scouts
who've earned their Arrow of Light
Cross-Over
Cub Scouting actually came about as a
place for boys who'd heard about Boy Scouts and were
eager to join — but weren't old
enough to do so. The original goal was to offer a
program to give them a taste of things to come,
appropriate to their ages.
As Cub Scouting has grown,
the right-of-passage into a Boy Scout Troop of the young
man's own choosing has remained the same. As a Webelos
II Scout in a Pack, he is given the opportunity to earn
its highest award: The Arrow of Light. He may then
formally join a Boy Scout Troop as a full member of a
Patrol, and start making important preparations into the
Spring for all the exciting summertime offerings that
same year.
Pack 5 applauds and
celebrates this success by holding a special ceremony
called "Cross-Over," where our eligible Webelos II
Scouts literally cross over a bridge with their parents
in Eberwhite Woods
[link], leaving us to be received by their new
Scoutmaster and other Boy Scout leaders from their new
Troop.
It is a solemn occasion with
a rich history. It's more than a "graduation," and thus
we separate it from the rank advancements of the other
Cubs in our Pack which takes place after June 1 each
year. All members of the Pack attend, as well as the
families, extended families, and friends of our Webelos
II Scouts. Typically, the Webelos I Den will lead a flag
ceremony. In 2009, Pack 5 was honored to have
representatives of our local Order of the Arrow
officiate.

"A
Scout is reverent."
All Scouts and Adult Leaders
dress in their "Class A" uniforms, and we appreciate the
special care that everyone takes in respecting this as
the high ceremony it is.
At the closing here, Pack 5
will no longer have a Webelos II Den (our Webelos I Den
must wait to advance with all the others). So there is a
certain bitter-sweetness to our participation in the
success of these boys.
They are always welcome as
Pack 5 alumni. Some may even return to serve our Dens in
the roll of Den Chief before too long.
