Pack 5 How-To
Conduct Pack 5 Round-Ups (Recruitments)

Ideally, Pack 5 Round-Up responsibilities should be shared by the Cubmaster and the Committee Chair: The former as "face of the Pack" and energetic motivator for all boys in attendance to join; the latter through a more subtle, direct approach to parents who can make valuable additions to Leadership.

Mechanics should be handled by the Membership and Re-Registration Chair, and the individual Den Leaders (and boys from each) should be in attendance on actual Round-Up events.

Timeline

Young boys (and their parents) join a Cub Scout Pack for the fun events that it has to offer, and they expect a well-organized, well-communicated plan. So the first step in either the Fall or Spring Round-Up is to have the Annual Plan (12 to 24 months out) in place. [link] Everyone on the team for this activity should attend District Round-Up Training.

  • Fall Round-Up. Preparations for the Fall Round-Up begin with the Annual Plan in August. This is followed by preparing and distributing flyers and posters to Bach and Eberwhite in early September for separate Round-Ups held later in the month; ideally, Round-Up dates should fall about a week before the next Pack Meeting. The largest concentration of boys will be for Tiger Dens, but treat this as an effort for all Den levels.

  • Spring Round-Up. Any tweaks to the Summertime schedule should be made by early April, so that flyers and posters can go up in the schools in early May. Actual Round-Up dates should be closer to the end of the school year, because the major target is boys who are just completing Kindergarten; they are eligible to join Pack 5 on June 1, and can participate in all activities that first summer except for Resident Camp.

Advice

Resist the temptation to combine this with other things.

It should be a stand-alone effort with its own agenda. You want to avoid distractions, competing agendas, and a diluted focus on the goal of registration. "Curriculum Nights" have not worked well for us, nor has combining Round-Up with a Pack Meeting.

In its Round-Up Training, District strongly recommends setting the goal among Pack Leaders that at least one parent for every boy registered is also him- or herself also registered as an Adult Leader.
